Oludeniz Story: Story Culture Fueled by History

Stories are very important in Anatolia. When we see a place or an object that we like, we immediately want to listen to its story. The story of Ölüdeniz and the story of Belcekiz dates back to ancient times.

In ancient times, ships passing through Belcekız anchored here and went ashore by boat to get drinking water. One day, as one of the sailors who went ashore to get water, the son of the Captain came ashore and met the beautiful Belcekiz there. The next thing is known: He falls in love with her.

When Belcekiz sees this handsome boy, she falls in love with him. The young man, who has to return to the ship after taking drinking water, goes ashore to get water constantly and they start meeting with Belcekiz.

One day, while the ship was sailing offshore, a storm broke out. The captain's son says that in the direction he is turning, there is a calm area like a bay. His father, who knows his love for the girl and thinks that he uses this situation as an excuse to get together with the girl he loves, does not believe his son. A fierce fight ensues between them. Finally, the captain throws his son into the sea and the boy dies. After some time, the sea is moving towards a calm cove where his son took the wheel. The girl waiting for the boy on the rocks throws himself there and he too dies. Since that day, the place where the young man died has been called Ölüdeniz, and the place where the girl died has been called Belcekız... A sad story...

How does Ölüdeniz stay clean?

How does Ölüdeniz, which is always a calm sea like a pool, maintain its cleanliness and clarity?

There are three reasons for this:

The spring water current at the bottom of Ölüdeniz creates a current from the bottom to the open sea. Thus, the water renews itself.

Secondly, since the salt concentrations of spring water and seawater are different, there is a continuous circulation of water from the open sea to the inner and outer parts.

Thirdly, as a result of the tidal effect, the sea rises and falls on average every 2-3 days. Thus, Ölüdeniz renews itself with the seawater coming from the open seas.
